The IIT Campus Sustainability Forum on Water Solutions was this past Friday from 12-1:20. The room wasn’t packed, but part of that was that some IIT students have class until 12:40. The featured speakers were Scott Beslow, an IIT graduate student in Environmental Engineering, and Dr. Tim Loftus, Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning. According to the slides presented, upcoming Campus Sustainability Forums include Dec. 2: Commitment Status, January: Climate Action, February: Sustainable Food, March: Sustainable Energy, and April 22nd: Earth Day and Action Plans. The MC also congratulated IIT’s new student group, Gangreen, on existing and expressed hope that they would make the most of an event called Recyclemania.

Speaking of IIT, most nights at closing (10pm), Global Grounds has to throw out some unsold pastries and goods because they expire at midnight. I think that it would be good publicity if these leftovers were left at the front desk of MSV with a big sign that says “Free- courtesy of Global Grounds- expires at midnight.” Of course, to conform to health precautions, the goods would have to be thrown out at midnight (in the unlikely case that there were any left). I think that this would be excellent publicity for Global Grounds. It seems unlikely that people would wait until the appointed hour to get free goods instead of buying them, because most evening purchases from Global Grounds are spurred by whim or hunger, and there’s never any guarantee that there will be pastries left at the end of the night. It might even help with the ever-worrisome problem of publicity for the little cafe.

The camp was about social networking applications- how to code them, how to keep them secure, and how to use them in the contexts of business and for-profit social networking.

The yearly IIT Pumpkin Launch, hosted as usual by the Biomedical Engineers, took place this past Friday 10/30 at 1pm on the Ed Glancy Baseball Field in the pouring rain. Because of the rain, attendance was lower than expected, but all of the available dry space was still filled with IIT students, faculty, and staff, as well as some visiting students from Lance Tech, a Chicago high school.

Spanish, and French- to name just a few- for several years in high school, and want more advanced courses. But a major problem (other than finances) is that language courses do not fit well into the rigorous class schedule that many IIT students must adhere to in order to get their degrees. But, if offered a low-stress, flexible, and entertaining way to keep up and improve their skillz, many students would jump for it.
