A look at computer-generated imagery through the years

By Krithik Kumar Chandrashekar

Most of you must have seen the trailer for the upcoming Avatar movie directed by James Cameron. And for those who did happened to catch the trailer, you most certainly would have been awed by the CGI. Avatar is one film which seems likely to explore new and possibly never before seen areas in CGI. Looking back at all those ‘Making of the Film’ DVDs I started to see the giant leaps CGI has taken since its inception. From Light-Cyles to Bullet Time, Dinosaurs to Mumakil and so on.

Quantum dots: nanocrystals that can revolutionize technology

By Rashmi Narkhede

Quantum dots, also known as nanocrystals, are a special class of materials known as semiconductors, which are crystals composed of periodic groups of II-VI, III-V, or IV-VI materials. Various mass production systems like colloidal synthesis, electrochemical techniques, pyrolytic synthesis, and sonochemical synthesis are used for the synthesis of quantum dots. Quantum dots are useful because of their ability to absorb the entire visible spectrum, as well as their easy tunability by changing the crystal size. Quantum dots made from the same material but of different sizes can emit light of different colors. They have a wide range of applications in various fields, including electronics, computers, biology (bio markers, detection of tumors), quantum computations, fluoroscence spectroscopy, lasers, electronic displays and most importantly in solar cells.

But GM and its Chevrolet division managed to come out with the car – The Chevy Volt.

Samsung’s Comeback def initely ain’t coming back!

By Kamakshi Palakodety

Aah. It’s that time of the year again when we review all that’s latest in the tech market and comment on our best picks of the year and pick on the not-so-good ones. The product I chose to review for this issue is none other than Samsung’s Comeback SGH-t559 handset. If you haven’t guessed by the title of this article already, this handset is not really a rage to rave about. In an attempt to combine the benefits of a compact phone with the benefits of a spacious big-screen phone, the design of the handset might have been compromised.
