Student Government Association’s meeting recap – January 29, 2025

Illinois Institute of Technology’s Student Government Association (SGA) had its first meeting for the Spring Semester on Wednesday 29, evening from 6:30 p.m. and commenced their initiatives for this upcoming term. The meeting happened in the Stuart Building last semester. However, the student government decided to shift their location to McCormick Tribune Campus Center (MTCC) Ballroom for this semester featuring Patrick Fina to present the new software that Illinois Tech is planning to use to replace suitable. For those unaware of what is Suitable, it is a software used by our school to provide students with a better campus engagement having a list of all active student organizations on the campus and to help students connect better. However, this new software shows promise and aids student connectivity better through the Office of Student Life (OSL).

Furthermore, the meeting had presentations from a new student organization named the National Association of Minority Landscape Architects (NAMLA). They had listed out their mission, vision and budget requirements which seemed convincing and was passed by the Senate. After which, the Senate broke into its small group meetings and discussed various events to come. A new legislation which is yet to frame, promises to prioritize traditional events on campus. This was put in place to improve the diversity for students wishing to celebrate their culture with more life and happenings to share festival spirits with. During the mid-spring, a public safety walk is planned to bring about awareness of public safety happenings, the awesome work that they do, and their to-dos for new students. This walk also counts as a shoutout to their undivided attention in aiding to keep the campus safe and sound for all students.

Next, there were discussions about the spring campus concert that is expected to happen between the last week of April and the first week of May. So far, the organizations that are on board with the campus concert planning are the Campus Life Committee of the Student Government Association, WIIT, the Greek Council and the Office of Student Life. There are plans of having food trucks, outdoor activities, inflatables, and more for audience engagement. The artist list is yet to be confirmed but is planned to be announced not anytime soon to keep the thrill up. The Campus Life Committee also restarted its progress with the Food Advisory Board (FAB). So far, FAB responded positively about refilling the milk faster, integrating indicator signs and getting Siracha & Valentina as soon as it’s available. Plans were put in place during the winter to arrange a time to inspect the kitchen space, to put more trash cans in the commons area and to offer more employee training.
