Illinois Tech has a growing global footprint and is now home to students from all over the world. It’s made its mark by attracting students from all cultures and diverse backgrounds. The lush campus is a treat to sore eyes and the faculty is renowned. This article is my spin on how IIT is evolving, the impact of international students joining the university, and the potential challenges IIT can face.
The educational paradigm has shifted over the past years, especially since COVID-19 which has introduced new ways of learning. Universities globally are adapting to these shifts and incorporating hybrid and online learning models. Illinois Tech is part of this trend as well and has seen an incredible rush in student enrollment, with an overall 27% increase in its enrollment, including local and international students. A great strategy employed by Illinois Tech was fostering a career readiness culture, making this concept its focal point. This helped attract a lot of international student crowds. The career management center at IIT regularly hosts events, and talks and is cultivating a hub for networking, embracing opportunities, and introducing students to industry leaders, new technologies, and professional communities within Chicago.
Some noteworthy trends include how IIT has recently embraced online education. The university has launched an MBA program through Coursera. This program is designed to be completely online and helps individuals who don’t necessarily want to move, working professionals, and students who wish to get an MBA at an affordable rate. Interested individuals can also save more with credit for prior learning. This is a flexible and innovative approach to fostering international education and helps students thrive in dynamic professional environments. International students in the master’s programs are offered a hybrid class structure and can choose 1-2 online classes every semester, helping them learn at their convenience. Given how the education structure works in other countries, this approach is a lot more attractive to international students.
To increase its international presence, the university has set up dual degree programs with international universities, allowing the flow of foreign exchange students. Recently, IIT has partnered with Narxoz University in Kazakhstan with a discipline in computer science. The curriculum at IIT is incredibly polished, renowned, and state-of-the-art. This has been introduced to the students at Narxoz university in an aim to foster international education and cultural switch.
Though IIT has made significant progress in international education, there have been certain challenges. Fostering a united student culture within international students has always been tricky. Cultural integration is a challenge everywhere internationally, and as an international student myself, I feel so far, I’ve always felt included and heard. Financial considerations are a major point for international students. Many international students have revealed that even though scholarships and aids are available, it isn’t enough to meet the required needs. Financial gaps can pose a potential obstacle for international students planning to apply to Illinois Tech in the future.
In conclusion, the prospect for Illinois Tech looks bright in the future. On a personal note, a lot of potentially interested candidates from different countries have reached out to me on LinkedIn to learn more about my experience at IIT in regards to the MBA Business Analytics program. The university’s proactive and flexible approach to education can successfully help navigate a dynamic international student market and provide a supportive environment for international students in the future.
