Understanding OPT: A crucial step toward career success for international students

Illinois Institute of Technology’s Office of Global Services (OGS) recently hosted an online workshop, Optional Practical Training (OPT) for international students. The workshop was conducted on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. via Zoom as part of a spring 2025 series to help students with U.S. F-1 Visas prepare for academic and professional life.

The workshop highlighted key aspects of the OPT process, such as application requirements, deadlines, necessary paperwork, work rules, and post-employment reporting. Students can work on OPT while studying (Pre-Opt) or after graduation. OPT is invaluable for most Illinois Tech students to gain real-world work experience and build their careers in the U.S.

Students were provided with a clear vision of the OPT application process and how to navigate through Designated School Officials (DSOs) without making errors and submit forms to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) within time. The moderators made clear the situations where students are allowed to prolong their work duration, provided that they meet employer and reporting demands.

Under Optional Practical Training (OPT) both F-1 visa students can temporarily work in the United States using their employment authorization to apply their educational skills from their main field of study. Students enrolled in F-1 visas can begin working for one year after program completion with STEM students receiving additional employment rights that extend to two years. The OPT program allows university students to transfer their educational learnings into practical professional settings where they can construct industry relationships and gain valuable expertise. The program serves as an important element for students to transition toward established positions within the U.S. tech and business industries.

Students were educated on maintaining their F-1 status via the SEVP portal, such as discussing unemployment, change of employment status, and address updates. OGS officials responded to queries and explained misleading elements of the OPT process, putting worried students at ease with regards to work permits. By conducting workshops and individual consultations, OGS allows students to make informed decisions and take on job opportunities confidently.

Absent students from this session are encouraged to visit future workshops, which are advertised through official sources and social media such as Instagram (@IITGlobalServices). They can also visit the OGS office for more details. Facilitating the success of students in programs like OPT is at the core of the institute’s mission. This recent workshop was evidence of their commitment, boosting the confidence of many students in their academic and professional lives.
