The Windy City is home to a rich vibrant art and cultural landscape, something I’ve recently been introduced to. This led me to explore the street art scene in Chicago during my free time and I found myself at a fun street art pop-up gallery at Fulton Market last year. Displaying the work of “Carousel Fine Art”– an art gallery known for their exclusive contemporary artwork, showcasing in Miami, Saint-Tropez, Atlanta, and Chicago. Some of my highlights were the fascinating stencil art and the massive murals. Art speaks to everyone differently, and to me, this artwork whispered – unique, inspired, and bold
Ever since, I’ve been on the lookout for more fun urban art displays and pop-ups in Chicago. Through this article, I’d like to take you readers on an artistic journey with a few recommendations of the unique art installations in Chicago.
Art-On-The Mart
Have there been times when you took a stroll along the iconic Chicago Riverwalk, and stopped midway because you saw beautiful art being projected on the landmark building called MART? I sure did experience this last summer! It’s safe to say I was stunned, along with so many Chicagoans. ART-ON-THE-MART displays contemporary art and uses the Mart building as a live canvas. The artwork is engineered by national and international artists, who collaborate with Chicago-based creative communities to drive a change. They have moved art to capture the attention of people, in most ways redefining public artwork displays. They are set to return in April 2025, and I can’t wait to go back!
Flight of Butterflies
This is an extraordinary art installation that is currently displayed throughout the parks in Chicago. This is art with a purpose and merges nature, creativity, and art. These butterflies are curated by local artists and raise awareness about the deep-rooted connection of humans to nature, and how necessary it has become over the past decade to preserve and protect our wildlife. What makes it more interesting is its merging with augmented reality. QR codes are placed next to each butterfly and scanning them will surround you with virtual butterflies! It’s a one-of-a-kind experience and is said to be running till September 2025 at the Magnificent Mile (which features 10 of these curated butterflies) and at various parks in Chicago.
Augmented Chicago: Inaugural Realities
A very appealing and innovative exhibition that’s currently being held at Millenium Park. It features the work of Chicago-based artists and is running through till November 2025 so do check it out if you’re in the area! This artwork blends augmented reality and the natural landscapes of the park to display art apparitions. Carlos Rolón, one of the artists displaying his work, allows visitors to experience a space to pause and connect with nature amid the city! It’s inspired by the beauty of Puerto Rico and transforms the park into a relaxing atmosphere. The one that I enjoyed reading about the most was the – Nomadicflouraticphylosianspawn – and no I promise you this isn’t a typo! It’s the name of the art apparitions by Claire Ashley! It’s a beautiful interpretation of the seasonal changes, depicted by a stunning color palette for spring, summer, fall, and winter. I personally can’t wait to check out this abstract art!
Chicago’s art scene is dynamic and offers the best of all worlds! Combining art, technology, and nature is truly immersive and exciting. If you’re on the lookout for some artistic exploration, check these recommendations out.
