Happy February Illinois Tech! Hope you had a good first month back. The Student Government Association (SGA) had their second Senate meeting for the spring semester on February 4th, 2026.

The Senate meeting opened with breakout sessions, where senators met with their respective constituent groups. During these sessions, Senators gathered three to five concerns students have been experiencing on campus and discussed possible approaches for addressing them. After the breakout sessions concluded, each group reported back to the full Senate to share what was discussed.

Several key issues emerged, including sanitation concerns in shared dormitory bathrooms, campus dining menus that are posted but not accurately reflected at the Commons, gaps in communication between faculty and students, and inconsistent mailroom business hours. While many other concerns were raised, these were among the most discussed.

Following the reports, Senators were tasked with taking ownership of these issues and working collaboratively to determine next steps toward potential resolutions. Senators have begun reaching out to their constituents and coordinating efforts to address these concerns and improve the overall campus experience.

PRESIDENTS REPORT:

President, Yailine Cano reintroduced the Food Advisory Board and invites students to attend and voice their concerns regarding campus dining as well. These meetings happen every other Friday at 11:00 AM. Email sga.president@illinoistech.edu if you’re interested.

Cano has also announced that the Finance Board is still currently finishing budget submissions after six hours of hearings with many more hours to go and should be releasing them shortly.

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT REPORT:

Executive Vice President (EVP), Erick Armando Silva Jr. required Senators to re-assign themselves for a committee to ensure they continue to fulfill their duty as active Senators of SGA.

At the last senate meeting, Brianna Sorrillo vacated the College of Architecture seat leaving the seat open for nominations. EVP, Silva Jr. nominated two 2nd Year architecture students for this position. These nominees were Jonathan Davis and Aidan Crouch. Both students had expressed their commitment and availability to be a resource for the students of the CoA. The Senate has voted Aidan Crouch, effective immediately to be the new Senator representing the College of Architecture with Crouch winning by a single vote.

As well as to the vacant CoA  seat, the Greek Council seat was also vacant. In addition to the lineup of Senators, Carlos Bernal confirmed as the new Greek Council Senator with the Senate having a unanimous vote in favor of this approval. On February 4th, at 7:03PM Carlos Bernal was sworn into SGA.

Bills and voting records are available upon request by emailing sga@illinoistech.edu.

Nothing was mentioned during Open Floor. The senate meeting was adjourned at 7:40 PM. That concludes this Senate update. The next Senate meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 18th at 6:30 PM in the MTCC ballroom, everyone is welcome. We encourage students to bring their friends and watch how SGA gets work done for the student body.
