Editor’s note: This is a direct notice from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which is due to visit our university in October of this year. This is a word-for-word copy of what was said in that document notice.

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has assigned a Financial Issue designation to Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, based on the institution having declared financial exigency.
A Financial Issue designation is meant to apprise the public that current conditions at an accredited college or university raise potential concerns about its resource base to support its educational programs as required by HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation. HLC does not undertake an independent evaluation of the institution in advance of assigning a designation.
While assigned the designation, Illinois Institute of Technology remains accredited.
What the Financial Issue Designation Means for Students
In most cases, colleges and universities will continue to accept the college’s credits for transfer and admission to other higher degree programs and institutions. As all colleges and universities define their own transfer credit and admission policies, students interested in other institutions are advised to seek information on individual transfer and admission policies.
Next Steps
The institution will host its previously scheduled comprehensive evaluation in October 2026. As part of the comprehensive evaluation, HLC will review the Institution’s ongoing compliance with HLC requirements, including but not limited to, Criterion 4, Core Component 4.B (resource base and sustainability).
HLC anticipates the designation will remain in place until the comprehensive evaluation process concludes. Following final action on the comprehensive evaluation, HLC will determine whether the designation can be removed or if other action is necessary.
To provide transparency for all stakeholders, HLC publishes a Directory of Institutions on its website. The directory includes information about a college or university’s accreditation status, recent activities and upcoming activities.
